Dawn of the Dead

“When there is no more room in hell,
the dead will walk the earth”

Dawn of the Dead, 1978, was written and directed by George Romero as an American Independent horror film and as the second film in his Living Dead series.  It featured David Emge as Stephen, Gaylen Ross as Francine, Ken Foree as Peter, and Scott Reiniger as Roger.  The film had initially had trouble getting investors until it reached Italian horror director Dario Argento, who happened to also work as a producer on the film and provide a soundtrack for the film.  The film is famous for its slow-moving, idiotic, and comedic blue-faced zombies that make the film more of a comic book piece through the crayon-red blood and pie throwing biker gang.

Dawn of the Dead, 2004, a remake of Romero’s 1978 film, was directed by Zack Snyder and written by James Cunn.  It had a much larger cast than the original featuring Sarah Polley as Ana, Ving Rhames as Kenneth, Jack Weber as Michael, Mekhi Phifer as Andre, Inna Korobkina as Luda, Ty Burrell As Steve, Michael Kelly as C.J., Kevin Zegers as Terry, Michael Barry as Bart, Lindy Booth as Nicole, Boyd Banks as Tucker, and Bruce Bohne as Andy.  The remake did not have the same plot as the original, except for the fact that survivors were living in an abandoned mall in the middle of a plague stricken town.  It did, however, make references to the original in a few ways.  One of the stores in the mall was called “Gaylen Ross”, to reference the actress who played Francine, Ken Foree was the pastor who said the famous line “When there is no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the earth”,  Scott Reiniger plays an army general, and a truck from the BP company can be seen.  Though this film received a lot of criticism for being so different than the original, it became one of the highest-grossing zombie films ever made.
